Imperialism brought the world together and tore it apart. This book explains how the Industrial Revolution made an impact on Imperialism and how the Imperial powers warred with each other and the countries they conquered. With vivid images, fascinating facts, and easy-to-read text, readers will be engaged as they learn about some of the most important people and occurrences that helped shape the Age of Imperialism, including The Boxer Rebellion, The Boer Wars, Imperialism in China, and the Japanese Empire. This book also includes text features like a table of contents, glossary, and index, as well as a creative in-class activity that allows students to think critically to further understand imperialism.
The series features influential western culture cornerstones that frequently receive cursory mention in textbooks, though this text is much more expansive. Formatted with colored visuals of period art and architecture, the books also include maps and phonetic pronunciations. Highlighting each spread are sidebars that expand and explain details. The concluding pages summarize the influence of the era or person on modern civilization. Though readability, format, and content are most suitable for middle school, the titles will be valuable resources wherever world history is part of the curriculum. Glossary. Index. Gr 4-5-A great feature of this series is that the volumes are complementary to one another. For example, Medieval accompanies Chaucer. It's an effective way of narrowing the focus and providing a specific experience connected to the era. Some information overlaps within each pairing, but since these are introductions, that's not necessarily a flaw as it can reinforce some key points. Oversimplification and superficiality are a risk when covering a subject as broad as the Byzantine Empire or the Enlightenment for a younger audience, but the authors do an admirable job of achieving depth while maintaining accessibility. Reproductions, photos, and sidebars break up the texts without making them too busy. Each book concludes by revisiting a tidbit from the text and inviting readers to complete a creative and thought-provoking activity. (c) Copyright 2012.
