Booklist (June 1, 2014 (Vol. 110, No. 19))
Grades 3-6. No matter where you live, this book will be a catalyst for kids to explore the great outdoors. The book is divided by habitats—water, trees, parks, backyards, and even the fun that can be had in a cityscape. Concise facts and snippets of other information are offered in colorful, high-contrast pages. There are also all kinds of activities that vary in difficulty. Kids are invited to build a solar oven, plant a butterfly garden, and make chalk for sidewalk games (though that seems complicated). Also included are guessing games and ideas for different sorts of play. Whatever the locale, this book makes a terrific companion. A list of top U.S. parks and a page about Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move program conclude. A top-notch addition to the National Geographic Kids series.
